The Tidone torrent flows along the Val Tidone, which is about 75 kilometres long. It has a distinctive shape, with the lower northern part of the valley in Emilia Romagna and the upper southern part in Lombardy.
This valley is full of history, castles and winemaking traditions. The large number of castles demonstrates the strategic importance of Val Tidone throughout history, counting almost one castle for each village: Corano, Pianello, Nibbiano, Trebecco, Castelnovo Val Tidone and Romagnese. Small, picturesque castles that you can visit but also imposing ones like the Castle of Zavattello and Rocca d’Olgisio, an old fortress that is part of the circuit of the Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza.
Starting from Castel S. Giovanni, which you can get to from Milan, our itinerary begins in the hills passing through Borgonovo Val Tidone and continuing towards Ziano Piacentino and the capital of Val Tidone wine, with over 750 wineries that you can visit, surrounded by vineyards on the sheer slopes of the hills. Continuing among the vineyards you come to Vicobarone, which borders with the province of Pavia, where you can tour the castle of Rovescala which produces wine and also provides farmhouse accommodation.
The numerous wineries in the Val Tidone work the vineyards in full respect of the local tradition together with the best cellar technology in order to produce young, fresh, scented and fruity sparkling wines, such as Malvasia Aromatica di Candia, Ortrugo and Pinot and reds such as Barbera, Bonarda and Gutturnio. Every winery encloses tradition and history, a close link with the territory and distinctive production techniques. Going on from Borgonovo Val Tidone towards Pianello Val Tidone you will be enchanted by the marvellous landscapes, with their vegetation, farms and farmhouses which skilfully protect the food and wine tradition of Piacenza.
You can follow the Val Tidone itinerary on bicycle or motorbike or stay in one of the splendid farmhouses offering accommodation and buy some local food products and taste the wines from each winery.
